Most likely causes, in the order we check them

What you can safely check yourself
- The cap. Lift the burner cap when the range is cold, set it back down flat and centred, and try again. Do this first.
- The ports. With the range cold and the burner off, brush the ring of holes with a soft brush. Nothing metal, nothing pushed into the holes.
- The other burners. If one burner is out and the rest work, the problem is that burner. If all of them click together, it is the module.
- Recent spill or deep clean. If either happened today, give it a few hours to dry before calling.
Clicking with no flame, and clicking that never stops
These are two different faults and they get confused constantly. Clicking with no flame means spark is happening but gas is not catching: cap, ports, wet or cracked electrode.
Clicking that continues after the burner lights means the module is not receiving flame confirmation. The burner works, the noise is the warning. That one is a part replacement, and it does not get better on its own.
Why professional ranges act this way
Viking uses sealed and open burner designs with heavy brass caps and a separate electrode per burner. That is why a single burner can fail while the other five are perfect, and why the fix is usually one small part rather than the whole cooktop.

Questions we get asked
Is it safe to keep using the range while one burner will not light?
If the burner is switched off and there is no gas smell, the other burners are safe to use. If you smell gas at any time, shut off the gas to the appliance and call the gas company first.
Can I light the burner with a match in the meantime?
On many Viking burners you can, but it means gas is flowing without ignition confirmation. Use it once to finish dinner, not as a habit.
How much of this can you fix on the first visit?
Electrodes, caps, port cleaning and modules travel with us, so most single-burner calls finish in one visit. Valves for older models are sometimes ordered.
The clicking stopped but now there is no spark at all. Better or worse?
Different fault. Silence usually means the switch or the module has given up completely. It is still a part.
